a selection of makeup

For me, a change in seasons usually means a change in my makeup routine, or at least delving to the back of my beauty drawer and bringing out some long forgotten favourites. After months of wearing pastel pinks and a bronzy look, I’ll swap my every day makeup to something a little warmer, with the main additions being darker lip products. I feel much more confident when I wear makeup and use products I know will give me the best possible result.

a selection of make up from GOSH, Urban Decay and Too Faced

Before I go anywhere near my face with a scrap of makeup I’ll prep my skin by carrying out my daily skincare routine. Then I’ll apply GOSH Primer Plus+ is pretty amazing, it smooths out my skins texture and helps my makeup last longer. This primer is super lightweight and comes in a pale nude shade when you first apply it, it will quickly adapt to most skin tones. I only need one pump to cover the whole of my face and it blends in easily using my fingers, making my skin feel super soft. It contains oak extract, plus it’s anti pollution and is perfume free, which is great for my sensitive skin and a perfect base for my makeup.

Having the perfect base allows the rest of my makeup to come together for a flawless finish. Too Faced Born This Way Foundation has a lovely creamy consistency and doesn’t dry out my skin. I use one pump on the back of my hand and dot some across my face, blending it in with a damp beauty blender. This foundation is incredible, it’s smooth application gives my complexion a wonderful flawless finish with a medium to full coverage, concealing any blemishes. It’s lightweight, lasts all day and still looks amazing. This is my new go-to foundation, so I’ll be using this one for quite a while!

I simply love the Makeup Revelation Iconic Lights Contour Palette if I want to add a little shape to my face, taking a medium sized makeup brush I’ll sweep the warmer shade (bottom row, second right) into the hollows of my cheeks and across the top of my forehead. These powders are so soft and creamy and incredibly pigmented, so don’t go over board at first!

GOSH The Strobe ‘N Glow Kit in 002 Blush is a gorgeous cheek palette which includes a beautiful matte blush in a peachy shade, two highlighting blushers and a highlighter. All four shades are stunning, the powders are incredibly soft and blend in beautifully.

Hourglass Highlighting palette

To brighten up my complexion I’ll add dusting of Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder all over my face. I’m using the shade Dim, which is a neutral peach beige, without being too sparkly. It helps to blurr any imperfections and gives me a healthy radiant glow.

a tube of concealer from Urban Decay

I’ve been using Urban Decay Naked Skin Complete Coverage Concealer for covering up the dark circles under my eyes, it’s my little magic wand. I dot a small amount where I need it and blend it in with a beauty sponge, it has the most amazing coverage, concealing blemishes in a smooth matte finish.

yellowed toned face powder

I set my concealer in place with GOSH Prime ‘N Set Primer and Mattifying Powder in Banana, occassionally I use it after I’ve applied my foundation to help control  shine and create a flawless look. It’s so incredibly lightweight that it didn’t feel like I was wearing any powder at all. You can also use it under your makeup as a primer to help minimize pores, fine lines and redness.

eyeshadow palette

The Urban Decay Naked Palette is one of my all time favourite eyeshadow palette for an everyday look. The palette comes with 12 golden neutral toned shades, including matte, satin and  shimmer. Each eyeshadow has a silky texture and blends in effortlessly, the shades are super pigmented and have amazing staying power. I apply Naked all over my lid, Smog in the crease, then I’ll take Darkhorse in the outer corners, blending it up into the crease and along my lower lash line. I’ll finish with Sidecar on the inner part of my eyelid and Virgin right in the inner corner.

a mascara from GOSH

I use Kat Von D Tattoo Liquid Liner to line my upper lash line, it’s absolutely incredible. I am rubbish at creating the perfect winged eyeliner and this one makes it so much easier to get right. It’s super pigmented in bold black and stays put all day, no amount of crying, eye rubbing or getting stuck in a downpour  is going to smudge this little beauty!

GOSH My Favourite Mascara gives your lashes a wonderful, natural, everyday look. The large fibre brush helps to lengthen and define each lash, yet adding loads of volume without going all clumpy. It puts quite a lot of mascara onto my lashes, making them look thicker and fuller, one coat is definitely enough. It wears lovely throughout the day and I’m not left with any flaky bits that have dropped onto my cheek. It’s smudge proof, lasts all day and still looked amazing when I got home, even after my eyes were watering!

a selection of lip products

For everyday I’ll apply NYX Lip Liner in Nude and Smashbox Be Legendary Lipstick in the shade Monogamous, which is a gorgeous browny nude and is creamy, a moisturising formula. I’m also obsessed with Barry M Matte Me Up Lip Kit in Allure which is a stunning metallic plum shade. I love wearing a bolder lip and some my favourites this season are NYX Butter Gloss in shade Red Velvet, Sleek Matte Lipstick in shade Russian Roulette, GOSH Lipstick in the shade Amethyst, and Rodial Suede Lips in shade Big Apple. These lip products are all incredibly long lasting and feel really comfortable to wear without drying out my lips.

Rose Gold Makeup Brushes and a selection of makeup

I have a vast collection of different makeup tools including brushes from Real Techniques, Spectrum and Indy Luxe. More recently I’ve been using these rose gold oval ones from Luxe Studio Uk, if you’d like to read more about them I’ll leave the review I wrote about them here.

Have you got a favourite product you always use or do you change your look with the seasons?

We’re round to another monthly favourites post again and this month I have been trying a number of new products, luckily most of them I’ve really loved using. May was also a great month for me as I had my cousin come to stay for a long weekend, we had a fantastic time and generally enjoyed each other’s company. As much as I love her I almost feel the need to put my makeup and wardrobe under lock and key so she doesn’t help herself to my stuff without asking!

As we suddenly had a mini heatwave in the UK I wanted a body spray that would freshen me up during the day and still smell divine, not a heavy perfume. Superdrug have introduced their Layering Lab range with 6 options to choose from. You can spray two of the scents at once to create your own unique smell or just wear one on it’s own. After smelling all of them I decided to opt for Fresh which has a delicious fruity, citrus smell and it’s such a bargain at only £2.99 that I will probably purchase one of the other scents too. I’ve been wearing it almost every day and carrying in my bag for when I need to freshen up.

After being wrapped up in thick woollies for so many months, I wanted to give my body some pampering. I always suffer from dry skin on my elbows, knees and ankles but this Scrub Love Detoxifying Activated Charcoal Body Scrub from scrublove.com has really help sort those areas out.  It smells so different to what I’m used to with body scrubs, but it made my skin feel so soft and hydrated. I love that it’s 100% natural ingredients, this one contains Avocado and Aloe Vera, which are both great for dry, sensitive skin.

Who doesn’t love a good face mask as part of there weekly skincare routine. I’ve had a few break outs around my nose, chin and across my forehead, I put it down to getting hot and sweaty during the warmer weather. While I was on the Lush store stocking up on bath bombs I came across this Cupcake Mask, I think it was the name that caught my eye rather than the actual product at first because it’s actually meant for oily skin. However after trying it for a few times, I couldn’t help fall in love with it. I’ve only been applying it to areas on my skin that have had problems and it’s pretty much sorted them out. Plus it smells amazing, I had to try not to eat it!

If you’re like me and suffer from dry flaky lips occasionaly then you need to try Lush Bubblegum Lip Scrub. You simply apply with your finger and gently rub it in and it leaves your lips feeling wonderfully soft and it’s completely removed any dead skin, I then just apply my favourite lip balm. It smells incredible and leaves your lips with a gorgeous sweet taste afterwards. I’ve been wearing a lot of liquid lipsticks lately and some of them can really dry out my lips, but this gorgeous scrub has made my lips feel so smooth and ready to apply whatever lip colour I’ve chosen that day.

There were some days I’ve not wanted to wear much makeup but still wanted to have a natural, summer glow. I’ve loved using these No7 Perfectly Bronzed Bronzing Pearls to give my face a nice healthy, holiday look. I use a medium sized makeup brush, swirl it over the pearls and apply to areas of my face where I want it to look as though I’ve been out in the sun. It is highly pigmented so you only need to apply a small amount if you’re pale like me. I can see I’ll be using these a lot over the coming months.

There had to be a liquid lipstick in here somewhere, didn’t there? I’ve not used many GOSH products before but after discovering I had some points on my Superdrug card I thought I’d treat myself to these gorgeous items. The Liquid Matte Me Lips is a stunning pink in shade Berry Me (no 006) and feels so lovely to wear, it’s not drying and stays on pretty much all day, The eyeshadow  is beautiful, this one is in Back To Nature (001) which has four gorgeous earthy toned shadows and is perfect for an every day look, I absolutely loved wearing all four shades.

Honestly, I cannot resist Jemma’s shop on Etsy that I have so many of her prints all over my office wall. These two stunning  copper quotes help keep me motivated every time I’ve a day when I feel I can’t achieve what I’ve set out to do, I’ve had a lot of moments like that this past month, maybe it’s the change in the weather! Anyway, I would loved to have featured all of the things I’ve had from Jemma in this month’s favourite but we’d be here all day. I can’t recommend her enough for prints, notebooks, cute trinkets and stationery. You really should have a look for yourself.

Last, but not least, this has been my favourite outfit during May. This short sleeved, knee length floral dress from Dorothy Perkins has been perfect for the gorgeous weather. It’s fitted around the top half and flares out at the waist and made of soft jersey material. I’ve worn the dress with a pair of sandals and this wonderful pinky, nude and black tote bag I got on a recent trip to Primark. The bag has two grab handles with a longer strap and inside there is one larger compartment with two zipped sections. This bag goes with so many other outfits too. On chillier days I’ve loved wearing my faithful denim jacket from GAP. It’s last years but I still get a lot of wear out of it and it just looked lovely with this dress as well as so many other items in my wardrobe this season.

Cleaning my make up brushes is one of those jobs that I know I need to do but it can take forever and sometimes it can feel like a real chore. I know it’s good hygiene to regularly remove all the oil, make up residue and dead skin cells (sounds disgusting doesn’t it!) and with some brushes not being cheap I also want to make them last longer and get my money’s worth.
Normally I’d clean my brushes using my hands and some baby shampoo, occasionally a tiny drop of baby oil first on sponges and brushes that have been used for foundation or concealer as it helps break down the build up of product.
So when I came across Real Techniques brush cleaning palette a while back I thought it was just one of those things that I didn’t need and that there were other things to spend my money on. I saw more and more people using them and saying how good they were by saving them so much time with this weekly chore. I had a moment of weakness and ended up buying one.

I got mine from makeupbrushes.co.uk and at the time it was on offer for £11.50 (normal price £12.99) with free postage. It also came with two sample sachets of the Real Techniques brush cleansing gel.

This extremely lightweight silicone palette is about 15cm long and it’s designed to fit comfortably in the palm of your hand. There’s a loop on the back which let’s you slip your hand through for a much better grip, so if your’re clumsy like me then that’s a bonus! The palette has a multi textured surface and allows you to gently swirl the bristles of your brush across them to give a much deeper clean.

As you can see, my foundation brush was pretty grubby and seems to need cleaning the most, so I put this one to the test first.

How to use the palette

  1. Squeeze a small amount of the cleansing gel on to the palette
  2. Add some warm water, taking care not to over fill the palette or getting the roots wet, which will completely ruin your make up brushes.
  3. Give each brush a swirl over the textured surfaces and watch all the gunk lift off. Amazing! You will need to repeat these steps when the water gets really dirty.
  4. Afterwards rinse each brush thoroughly and squeeze out any excess water as you would normally do using your traditional method.

Hey presto! Squeaky clean brushes. It took half the time to actually clean them which I was really impressed with. This brush also has white tips so it was a good example to show you how clean it was after using the palette.

When I’m cleaning all of my brushes together I’d normally leave them on a towel hanging over the edge of my dressing table to allow them to air dry, but if I was just doing a few then I could also use this palette to rest my brushes across and allow them to dry.

Was it worth the money? Well, I love it, simply because it saved me a lot of time and got my brushes a lot cleaner than just using my hands, so it’s a great little tool to have. And it’s in a gorgeous pink colour too! However I won’t be purchasing the cleansing gel as I also tried cleaning a couple of my brushes using baby shampoo on the palette and this worked just as well as the gel had done.

Have you tried this palette? How do you clean your make up brushes?
